New Ruling- Passenger Laptop Data Viewable- No suspicion necessary!

On Monday, a federal appellate panel gave customs officials the green light to boot up and view data on any airline passengers' laptop computers- without probable cause or reasonable suspicion of a crime. Two of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal's most conservative judges joined a President Bush appointee from the district court in Oregon, who sat by designation, to reverse a Los Angeles trial judge and OK the searches. U.S. v. Arnold, U.S.C.A. 9th, DAR p. 5592. The panel rejected arguments that officials perusing laptops at airports subject innocent travelers to unconstitutional invasions of their privacy.
